Koh Phayam / Chiang Mai, Thailandmilestone
God's Word in the Moken Tongue
churchschoolcommunitymilestonefundraising
In mid-2024 Philip's work reached a generational milestone: the start of translating the Bible into Koh Phayam Moken, using Thai script (which most Moken can read). Wud and Gomin trained under Indian translators in Chiang Mai; the team began with Luke, planning John, Acts and ten Bible stories, for a Moken population of around 1,000 across Ranong, Phang Nga and Phuket. Slow and costly work — a new written form must be devised for Moken sounds Thai script lacks — but the first Scripture ever in the Moken tongue. Funding for Luke was estimated around 34,000 baht.
This ties the Wud throughline to the church thread: the drummer boy of 2012 is now helping carry Scripture into his own people's language.
